Flintergill and Deepdale Circular from Dent

Walk 10 - A classic short walk around Dent suitable for families - 5 miles [3 hours] by car or bus. This is a relatively easy family walk although with a stiff uphill at the start. There are fine views of the Howgills and Rise Hill plus a pleasant riverside walk on the return

Start from the bus shelter in the centre and proceed to the left hand side of the school soon passing the village green. The road becomes a track and starts to climb steeply up Flintergill, an impressive limestone ravine. In winter this will be a series of waterfalls although in summer it is quite likely to be dried up. There is a lime kiln on the ascent and be sure to visit the barn exhibition at High Ground accessed trough a gate on the right hand side.

Carry on to the top of the track. As the track levels off the views back across Dentdale and on to the Howgills are impressive. There is a viewing point over a stile on the right, Carry on to a gate at the T junction with Green Lane. Turn left along the old drovers road and proceed for 1 mile turning left through a gate and down Nun House Outrake a stony track. Passing Nun House farm cross the minor road to Ingleton and directly across the road pass through Peacock Hill farmyard and a gate. Now walking across open pasture look for the derelict farmhouse at Scow straight ahead. Turn left. There is a waymark in the field. Proceeding downhill and to the left of Deepdale Beck

Pass through 3 fields carefully looking for the stiles [sometimes difficult to spot] and on the 4th field bear right down through the trees to Mill Bridge. Cross the minor road and proceed along the path directly on the other side. This now follows the side of Deepdale Beck to meet the River Dee. The path naturally bears left to follow the river and eventually arriving at Church Bridge. Follow the road into Dent for refreshment in one of the pubs or tea rooms.

The 564A service has now been assured into the foreseeable future. This is an excellent means of reaching Dent Village or Sedbergh whether to walk or visit the pubs, cafes and heritage centre. The Saturday bus times at the time of writing are depart Dent Sta 1020, and on the return Sedbergh 1500, 1650 or depart Dent village 1515, 1705. Please consult the timetable
