Cautley Spout and The Calf

Walk 12 - A classic walk taking in the impressive Cautley Spout waterfall and an ascent of The Calf [676m] 10 miles - 5 hours by bus or car starting from Sedbergh.

Starting from Sedbergh library walk along the main street and the the main road for a short while. Turn right after Settlebeck High School. There is a footpath that follows the road. At the River Rawthey turn left and follow left hand river bank to reach Straight Bridge. Crossing the main road take the path directly on the other side. This veer away from the river to reach the farm at Buckbank. Pass though the farmyard and turn left along a minor road. This becomes a track. Follow the path clinging to the foot of the hillside for some 2 miles until reaching Cautley Holme Beck an impressive vista with the first view of Cautley Spout. Bear right through a gate and then on to a foot bridge. Bearing left follow the well used footpath towards Cautley Spout and to the right of the beck.

The path then becomes to climb very steeply. There is a sign urging walkers to take zig zags and height is quickly attained. At the top of the falls - a series of cascades - the path follows the stream in an elevated valley. Part of the way up is a sheepfold with a newly created obelisk at one corner. The stream eventually disappears and the path makes the final ascent to a ridge with the well used track across the Howgills. Turn right for 1/4 mile to reach the trig point at The Calf [676m].

On leaving The Calf retrace steps and follow the path downhill and then uphill to reach Calders [674m]. The path proceeds steeply downhill and then uphill to Arant Haw [605m]. A decision can be made whether to take in the hilltop or carry straight on. With Winder in the distance look for a feint path on the left leading down Settlebeck Gill. The path follows the left of the gill all the way down to the fell boundary. Pass through a metal gate and follow a foot path down to a farm. Bear right through the farm gate and on to a road through the houses at the back of Sedbergh. Turn right at the main street and back to the library and the bus back to Dent Station.

The 564A service has now been assured into the foreseeable future. This is an excellent means of reaching Dent Village or Sedbergh whether to walk or visit the pubs, cafes and heritage centre. The Saturday bus times at the time of writing are depart Dent Sta 1020, and on the return Sedbergh 1500, 1650 or depart Dent village 1515, 1705. Please consult the timetable
