Birk's Fell from Hubberholme

Walk 13 Birk's Fell [609m] from Hubberholme - 11 miles - 5 hours - an excellent upland walk starting at Hubberholme taking in the top of Old Cote Moor [607m], Birk's Tarn and Horsehead [609m] returning along the beautiful valley of Langstrothdale. There is an option to shorten this to 9 miles by descending at Horsehead Gate to Yockenthwaite Back to Upper Wharfedale Page

Park near the bridge at Hubberholme - parking spaces can be at a premium but with an early enough start there shouldn't be too much of a problem. Cross the bridge in front of the George Inn and turn left along the road towards Buckden. After 1/4 mile look for a stile on the right and follow path paralleling the road to meet a farm track. Turn right up the track which winds its way up the hill, through copse and a sheep enclosure to emerge at the open pasture. Continue up the well used path diagonally up the hillside emerging near a wall at the top. The trig point for Old Cote Moor will be seen 100m away. Bear right alongside the dry-stone wall following the ridge. Very soon Birk's Tarn will come into view. This is worth a quick deviation before rejoining the path.

The ridge twists and turns crossing a few walls eventually emerging at rough open pasture with a fence, After a while it might be preferable to cross to the left of the fence as it can get a little boggy at the bottom of the depression where there are a few peat bogs. Continue along the ridge climbing slightly uphill to arrive at Horse Head Gate. If taking the longer walk carry straight on. The trig point will be seen over the wall. After another mile there is a stile in the wall. Don't cross the stile but turn right at this point and quickly descending down the hillside to Beckermonds to meet the river.

Bear right along the river bank and follow path passing small farmhouse. Cross the river and now on the other side the path deviates from the river for a short way intially up a farm track and then turns back to the river bank. Now on the left hand river back continue along well used path passing Yockenthwaite stone circle and emerging at Yockenthwaite itself. Passing the farm buildings the path turn right down to the river bank. Follow the river wall the way back to Hubberholme Church. Back to Upper Wharfedale Page
